Himachal Pradesh is situated in the western Himalayas region in the northern part of India.   • Common Name: Western Tragopan
  • Scientific Name: Tragopan Melanocephalus Grey
  • Local Name: Jujurana in Kullu Valley, Pyara in Kinnaur region, Jyazi in Bushahr and Fulgar in Chamba and Kangra districts.

Western Tragopan is the State Bird of Himachal Pradesh as it has replaced the Monal bird. It is also known as the national bird of Himachal Pradesh. Male Western Tragopan is dark bright greyish-black in colour spotted with several white dots. They possess a conspicuous red colour with blue pores. They have a short crest along their crown with two brightly coloured fleshy horns and a cloured lappet that hangs from the throat.

Females are more brownish-grey in colour and lack the colourful adornments of males. The weight of the male is 1.75 to 2.25 Kg and the female weight is between 1.25 to 1.50 Kg. The size of males is between 65 to 73 cm & females’ size is 55 to 65 cm. Western Tragopan is considered to be monogamous. They build their nest either on the ground or in the trees.

Snow leopards are often referred to as the “Ghost of Mountains” Now it is the state Animal of Himachal Pradesh as it has replaced the musk deer. The snow leopard is also known as the national bird of Himachal Pradesh. It is a stunning animal with long thick fur that act as an insulating blanket during the harsh climate of mountains. The physique colour of the snow leopard is cream yellow to white-grey with yellow-tinged fur and has dark grey or black rosettes or spots over the physique. The long and thick tails of snow leopards help them to maintain function and balance during harsh climates and stability in steep and rocky terrain.

The size of the Snow leopard is 90 to 130 cm and the size of the tail is between 70 to 100 cm. The weight of a male leopard is between 45 to 60 Kg and females weight is between 30 to 45 Kg. Snow leopards have short vocal cords so they cannot roar like other big cats, however, they can snarl, growl, yowl and meow.

Pink Rhododendron is a Himachal Pradesh state flower, and this is a very beautiful flower with pink-tinged to purple-white flowers arranged like a small bell about 1-1.5 inches long. These flowers bloom from spring to April and May month. This flower species is like and shrub or small tree up to 5 meters. It is found in the forest of HP located in an excessive and bloodless climate. This flower is known for its medicinal and ayurvedic uses. Native of Himachal uses these flowers to make the sauce (chutney) during the summer to prevent heat strokes.
